-er → short adjectives

• tall → taller
• short →  shorter
• long →  longer

-ier → adjectives ending in -y

• happy → happier

more → long adjectives (2+ syllables)

• dangerous → more dangerous 
• difficult → more difficult

CVC 

double a consonant before adding -er when a short adjective end in Consonant, Vowel and Consonant.
